Notebook Guide

Notebook is the fastest way to capture and digitize documents.

What is a Notebook?

A Notebook is a quick-capture note that:

• Accepts photos or PDF uploads
• Automatically reads text from your images
• Lets you mark areas to capture specific data
• Can be sent to automation

Creating a Notebook

1. Click Create Note on the dashboard or navigate to /notebooks
2. Take a photo or upload an existing image/PDF
3. Wait a few seconds while the text is read from your image
4. Your notebook appears with the extracted text

Panorama Capture (Long or Wide Documents)

When a document is too long or too wide to fit in one photo, use Panorama capture to merge several overlapping shots into a single image.

Capturing with the Camera

1. On the notebooks page, click the Panorama capture button
2. Pick the pan direction in the top bar: vertical (long pages) or horizontal (wide documents)
3. Press Start and pan slowly over the document — frames are captured automatically as you move
4. Press Stop, then review the frames: reorder or remove them as needed
5. Click Merge frames — the new notebook opens with the complete document as one image

Using Photos Instead

No camera at hand? Click Use photos and select several overlapping pictures — they are merged the same way.

Tips

• Overlap: each frame should share roughly half its area with the previous one — the overlap is how frames are aligned
• Move slowly: capture pauses while the camera moves too fast, to avoid blurry frames
• No overlap? Frames that cannot be aligned are joined edge-to-edge along the pan direction instead — nothing is lost

Working with Fields

After the text is extracted, you can:

Mark Data Areas

1. Click on the notebook image
2. Draw a rectangle around the data you want to capture
3. Name the field (e.g., "Invoice Number", "Date", "Amount")
4. The value is automatically read from that area

View Extracted Text

1. Click Text Content in the notebook toolbar
2. View the full markdown extraction
3. Copy or edit as needed

Using Notebooks with Automation

If you have the Nocarta Desktop app:

1. Open a notebook
2. Click Dispatch to Desktop
3. Select an automation batch
4. The notebook data will be used as input for automation

This enables automations like:

• Capture receipt on phone → Auto-submit expense report on desktop
• Scan invoice → Auto-enter into accounting system

Drawing Translator (Diagram Analysis)

Turn hand-drawn diagrams and flowcharts into editable code with AI-powered analysis.

Analyzing a Diagram

1. Upload or take a photo of your hand-drawn diagram
2. Click Parse as Diagram in the notebook toolbar
3. Wait 10-30 seconds for AI analysis
4. View the detected structure and generated Mermaid code

Supported Diagram Types

• Flowcharts: Process flows, decision trees, process automations
• Mind Maps: Central ideas with radiating branches
• Org Charts: Hierarchical structures
• Technical: ERD, sequence diagrams, state machines, architecture
• Planning: Timelines, Kanban boards, wireframes
• Presentations: Slides with titles and bullet points

Editing the Output

1. View the generated Mermaid code on the output page
2. Click Edit to modify the code
3. The diagram preview updates in real-time
4. Click Save to persist changes
5. Use Rollback to restore the original AI output

Creating Automations from Diagrams

After analysis, click Create Automation to convert the detected structure into an automation. Each node becomes an automation step.

Re-analyzing with Different Settings

If auto-detection gives wrong results:

1. Click Re-analyze
2. Select a specific diagram type from the dropdown
3. Click Yes, Re-analyze

Tips

• Photo Quality: Clearer photos give better text reading results
• Supported Formats: JPEG, PNG, PDF (first page is used)
• Tables: Tables may need manual field marking
• Search: All extracted text is searchable from the notebooks list
• Diagrams: For best diagram analysis, use clear lines and readable text
• Mermaid: Learn Mermaid syntax at mermaid.js.org
